Obion County: No Tax Increase, Tax Rate Stays Same, Budget Approved Unanimously

Union City, Tenn.–After hearing a long list of highlights from Budget Chairman Sam Sinclair, the Obion County Commission unanimously approved the county budget at its meeting Monday.

During the budget process, he said, “We ask the departments to dig deep into their budgets and they do a really good job.” He said most of the departments have showed an increase in their maintenance agreements and postal charges. Two departments that showed a decrease were the health department and the election commission.

The lion’s share of the budget is distributed to the school fund, at 50 percent, with the general fund at 30 percent.

The Obion County budget is at $75M, with no tax increase and the tax rate staying the same. Sinclair said the county is paying down its school debt and was able to pay down $1M this year, and it’s anticipated it will be paid off in two years.

The budget also includes a state-mandated 3 percent increase for county officials.

Sinclair also pointed out, “We’re debt-free to outside entities. The only thing we owe is ourselves.”
