Wins by the Union City girls’ tennis team, the Tornado high school baseball and soccer squads, and the UC Middle School soccer team headlined a busy Thursday for Tornado spring sports entries.
The following is a recap of all contests played by the Twisters.
HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS
UC 7, Huntingdon 0 (G)
Huntingdon 6, UC 1 (B)
The Lady Tornadoes posted their second shutout in three days to move to 2-1.
Twins Davey and Dani Frankum, along with Bertie Jenkins won twice in the UC girls’ 7-0 blanking of the Fillies. Josie Ross teamed with Jenkins to win in doubles play, while Allie Vincent and Lexi Petty rolled to singles triumphs for the Twister girls.
Union City’s boys managed just one victory – that by Paul Martin Tohn in singles – in dropping a 6-1 decision vs. the Mustangs to fall to 1-2.
Kobe Kirk, Foster Rodgers, and Camden Dawkins all put up a good fight in individual play before each lost a contested match. Rodgers and Tohn did likewise in the No. 2 doubles competition.
UC is scheduled to play at South Gibson on Saturday – weather permitting – before visiting Westview on Monday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
UC 13, Tipton Christian 1
The Tornadoes benefitted from four TCA errors in an eight-run first inning and breezed to their fourth consecutive victory – the last three via the mercy rule.
UC (4-2) sent 14 batters to the plate in that marathon first frame. Ben Kail and Logan Dawkins had RBI singles in the inning.
The Twisters tacked on five more runs in the fourth with Ben Howell’s two-run knock the highlight.
Kail finished 3-for-4, while Troy Joslin and Howell had two hits and a pair of RBIs each. Sam Jones and Logan Vincent scored two times apiece, with Jones driving in two runs.
Copeland Chism improved to 2-0 on the mound, allowing just one hit and four innings.
UC is scheduled to face Covington tonight at 6 to wind up a two-game stint in the Carl Perkins Classic.
HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER
UC 5, Dyer Co. 3
Union City broke into the win column against DC after losing its first three matches of the season.
Lucas Ajanel-Baten scored a pair of goals, Juan Carlos Barron found the net and recorded a pair of assists, and Brandt Huffstutter and Khazarion Scates each tallied for the Tornadoes. Silverio Acevedo was also credited with an assist for the victors.
Eric Lopez turned away six shots in goal for the victors.
“I’m proud of the guys for the effort they gave in the full 80 minutes tonight,” UC coach Lazzarus Scribner said. “Communication and effort won this game.”
Union City opens district play on Tuesday at home against Huntingdon.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER
UC 10, Clarksburg 1
The Tornadoes peppered Clarksburg with 22 shots on goal and squared their record at 2-2 with a mercy-rule triumph.
Alan Martinez scored four times, and Luis Escobar found the net twice for UC, which scored seven goals in the second half after carrying a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
Carlos Rodriguez, Jeremy Martinez, Alessandro Rosas, and Brian Cobon-Martinez each added goals to the Twister total. Jeremy Martinez was credited with a pair of assists.
“This was good win for us,” UC head coach Jason Deem said after the contest. “All of our players were able to play valuable minutes, and it’s great to get our younger players in a game for the future.”
The Tornadoes travel to McKenzie on Monday for a 5 p.m. match.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Obion Central 5, UC 2
OC handed the Lady Tornadoes their first loss of the season after two victories.
Four errors hurt Union City’s cause, and the Twister girls could manage but three hits while striking out 11 times.
Kennedi Robinson had two of UC’s three safeties and scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Hadley Smith singled in Robinson for one Lady Tornado tally, while Whitley Jenkins knocked in the other run.
Smith was charged with the pitching loss after going the distance with five hits and four earned runs allowed.
Union City hosts Hickman County on Monday at 5 p.m.
