MURFREESBORO, Tenn.- The University of the Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell to St. Bonaventure 13-6 as it finished out the MTSU round-robin weekend at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Garner Anderson (double, RBI, run scored, two stolen bases), Jonah Katsaboulas (run scored), Arderrius Townsend (RBI, run scored, hit by pitch twice) and Blaze Bell (RBI) had multi-hit games. Additionally, Brody Capps (solo home run, two runs scored), Cameron Greene (two walks), Jalen Fithian (stolen base, run scored, walk), Frank Micallef (walk) and JT Popick (walk) contributed to the Skyhawk offense.
Jacob Sitton started the game on the mound and was followed by four innings from Quincy Thornton (0-1, four strikeouts), Zach Wager, Austin Gast (1.1 perfect innings with one strikeout), Quin Long (one inning pitched, one punchout), Shawn Perez (one inning pitched) and Brock Arender (no hits, one strikeout).
UT Martin (4-6) found themselves down 1-0 after the first inning but quickly tied the score with Capps’ fourth long ball of the year. The Bonnies (7-3) broke the tie in the following frame but failed to score in the third after Thornton left two stranded by whiffing the final batter. This gave the Skyhawks the opportunity to take their first lead of the game as Anderson drove home Fithian on a double and then later scored on a stolen base and throwing error.
St. Bonaventure brought the score even in the fourth but Bell’s base knock during the home half scored Townsend and pulled UT Martin in front by a 4-3 margin. The Bonnies used a five-run fifth to garner a lead that they carried to the end of the ball game.
Gast recorded the final out of the fifth and put together a clean sixth for the Skyhawks. St. Bonaventure added four runs over the next two innings before UT Martin got one back in the bottom of the eighth when Katsaboulas raced home on a wild pitch.
Both teams scored in the ninth with the Skyhawks run coming off an RBI single from Townsend as he plated Capps. However, the deficit was too large to overcome for UT Martin.
The Skyhawks will get prepared for a midweek matchup at Alabama A&M on Tuesday, March 4 at 1 p.m.
