Union City, Tenn.–Union City Middle School science students heard from those “in the know” while recently studying fiber optics.

Kyle Ross, CEO of Union City Energy Authority, and UCEA employee Brett Gore – a proud graduate of Union City Schools – shared their extensive knowledge of the subject with classes of UCMS teacher Beverly Dones.

The guest speakers highlighted and concluded a study unit on Waves and Light for the 8th graders.

Ross and Gore each shared their expertise on the origin and need for fiber optics and the importance of meeting the world’s communication demands. They provided in-depth details on the worldwide need for fiber optic capabilities and specifics, as well as constant upgrades needed to keep everyone connected with the world.

Ross arrived with a uniquely prepared PowerPoint, a plethora of knowledge, and tools to explain and display the effects of the fiber optics technology. He communicated how fiber optics affect the basic operations of everyday necessities – ranging from phones to live streaming and beyond.

Ross provided encouraging words for the students, reminding them to keep studying: “Even if you think you may never use the knowledge because it builds discipline,” he said.

“Doing so (studying) can help an individual progress from a starting position with a company to eventually owning and operating a competitive company that serves tens of thousands of citizens, and more.”

Gore, a former UC student of Ms. Dones, addressed the 8th-grade science classes.

He spoke confidently about being employed with UCEA since 2020. Gore also shared his scholastic experience and his work experiences in many places before returning to Union City.

Gore wound up his presentation by demonstrating the basics of fiber optic installation throughout Union City and then concluded with solid advice.

“If you find something you like and have a great, dependable work ethic, you can do anything and be anything you want to be.”
