Union City, Tenn.–The results are in.
It was the Duck in a landslide.
First-graders in the classes of Taylor Escue and Angie Conley cast their ballots on Tuesday, giving an overwhelming nod to the Duck over the Farmer in a ‘special’ Election Day lesson.
The Union City Elementary classes learned about the electoral process while listening to the book ‘Duck for President’ by award-winning author Doreen Cronin.
In the kid-friendly writing, the Duck tires of doing his chores and decides to hold an election to replace Farmer Brown.
Each student received a ballot from their teacher and placed it in the ‘ballot box’ after voting. They also got ‘I Voted’ stickers after submitting their choice.
Votes were then tallied, and the classes graphed their results to illustrate the winner. Students then wrapped up the lesson by reading a decodable reader entitled ‘Voting,’ and wrote a brief description of what they would do if they were president.
“It was a great learning practice for the kids, and they had a great time learning about the election process,” Escue said.
