Former Murray State men’s basketball assistant coach Amir Abdur-Rahim passed away Thursday due to complications during a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital. He was 43.
He currently was head coach at the University of South Florida and led the Bulls to the American Athletic Conference’s regular-season championship a year ago.
The school said he died from complications that presented while he was undergoing a procedure at a Tampa-area hospital.
According to the Murray State News, Abdur-Rahim was an assistant for the Racers from 2006-2011 under former coach Billy Kennedy and worked alongside current head coach Steve Prohm.
He had assistant coaching jobs at the College of Charleston, Texas A&M and Georgia before taking the head coaching job at Kennesaw State in 2019. He stayed there until 2023 before accepting a head coaching job at the University of South Florida.
University of South Florida President Rhea Law said Abdur-Rahim made a “indelible impact” on the university and brought a “unmatched enthusiasm.”
“Throughout my time working with Coach Abdur-Rahim, I was continually inspired by his leadership,” Law said. “[I] truly admired his sincere approach to connecting with our entire student body. His influence on our student-athletes, coaching staff and the university community will live on forever.”
