Union City, Tenn.–The Union City girls’ varsity tennis team won the ‘B’ Division championship of the USJ Invitational in Jackson over the weekend.
The Lady Tornadoes stretched their match-winning streak to seven by defeating Brighton (6-1), St. Mary’s (7-0), and then topping Trinity Christian Academy 5-2 in the title round on Saturday.
UC is now 7-2 on the season, heading into today’s match at Westview.
Union City’s boys (3-6) went 1-2 in the event, beating Brighton (4-2) and losing to Collierville (7-0) and a combined team of TCA and USJ 4-2.
The Lady Tornadoes also fielded a partial second team in the tourney, with that group winning two out of three matches.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
UC 20, Gleason 1
Union City erupted for 16 runs in the third inning, sending 22 batters to the plate in a thrashing the host Lady Bulldogs in their District 14A opener.
The Twister girls (2-5, 1-0) smacked a half-dozen extra-base hits in that third frame. Eight of UC’s nine starters collected hits, and each player in the lineup scored runs.
Marlee Theobald had the biggest day for the Lady Tornadoes with three hits, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Clare Atwill went 3-for-4 with four ribbies, and Emmaline Quall had two hits and scored four times.
Madie Theobald and Addison Carr collected three hits apiece, with Carr driving home three tallies and Theobald scoring twice. Caty Jo Hoffman went 2-for-3 with two ribbies and two runs scored, and Kylie Mayes knocked in three runs. Kennedi Robinson crossed the plate three times.
Carr was not scored upon while striking out five in two innings of pitching work to collect the win.
Union City plays at Hickman County today, then hosts South Fulton on Tuesday.
HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER
UC 5, Huntingdon 4 (OT)
KhaZarion Scates booted home the game-winning goal in the second overtime to lift the Twisters to a district road victory.
Scates’ difference-maker, which came off a feed from Marcus Landeros, gave Union City a 5-3 advantage.
The contest was tied at 2-all at the end of regulation before Gavin Morgan and Rylan Robinson found the goal in the first extra 10-minute session to give UC the lead.
Cohen Robinson and Landeros scored first-half goals to put the Twisters up 2-0.
Joseph Lattus added an assist to the winning cause. Rylan Robinson and Cohen Robinson also set up points with nice feeds.
Jayce Rogers had eight saves in goal for UC.
Union City (4-0-2) plays host to Haywood on Thursday.
MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL
Halls 6, UC 4
Halls put up a five-spot in the third inning to rally from a 3-1 deficit and went on to hand the Tornadoes their first loss in eight games this season.
Will Kail reached base via a single and a walk and drove in a run for UC. Brayden Marshall scored and had an RBI, while Kobe Maddox singled and scored. Japeth Caldwell knocked home a tally, and Jackson Theobald walked twice and scored.
Kail was the losing hurler, giving up five earned runs and five walks in 2 2/3 innings. Preston Creswell got four outs in relief without being scored upon.
Union City will host Crockett County on Tuesday for a doubleheader, the first game starting at 5:30 p.m.
