Union City, Tenn.–From Tiptonville to Bristol – and all points between – Union City High School students continue to rank among the best and brightest in Tennessee.
Data recently released by the Department of Education listed UCHS among the Top 20 in the entire state in four different subjects with end-of-course testing.
Union City Schools, which annually ranks in the Top 10 in Tennessee in ACT scores, came in sixth in the state in Algebra II and ninth in English II when EOC numbers were compiled for the 2022-23 school year. UC was 16th in Geometry and 19th in Biology, showing improvement from the year before in five of six subjects overall.
“Our students are challenged every day to be the best versions of themselves,” UC Director of Schools Wes Kennedy said. “They and our teachers take great pride in being measured against the best of the best, and they’re intent on broadening their horizons beyond our region.
“I’m extremely proud of how they continue to strive to raise the bar with our test scores.”
Union City did particularly well among all Northwest Tennessee schools (north of Jackson to the Tennessee River), ranking no lower than sixth in seven tested subjects.
It was first in Algebra II and English II, fourth in Algebra I, fifth in Geometry, English I, Biology, and sixth in U.S. History.
Listed by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top high schools in the country in six of the last seven years, UCHS students also excelled in AP (Advanced Placement) testing at the conclusion of the 2022-23 school year.
One hundred percent of AP Calculus BC students scored a ‘5’ on the test, earning college credit, financial reimbursement for the test, and $500. Every student who took the AP Literature test also earned a passing grade, which resulted in test reimbursement at the minimum.
More than 60 students earned college credit for their AP test scores, with the group scoring above the state average in six AP subjects. The UC Board of Education handed out bonuses of over $18,500 to those students who scored ‘4’ or ‘5’ on the tests.
Additionally, the average ACT scores (29.19) of UC Magnet School members in the Class of 2023 were among the Top 10 in the state.
“The combination of these scores is why Union City High School regularly ranks in the Top 10 in Tennessee in the ACT scores,” UCHS Principal Jacob Cross stated.
“My personal goal is for us to be ranked in the Top 15 in all EOC testing subjects, and I truly believe that is a reality in the very near future.”
