UC Cross Country, Golf Claim Wins

Union City golfers claimed team wins in both girls’ and boys’ play Tuesday at Wynridge Greens in Troy.

The Lady Tornadoes easily triumphed over Halls 93-120, while the Twister boys finished with a 13-stroke win (182-195) vs. homestanding Obion County Central.

Mimi Jenkins was the match medalist for the UC girls, shooting a 42. Adaline Rice came in with a 51.

Reese Paschall, Gavin McGuire, and Copeland Chism posted matching 45s to pace the Tornado boys to their victory. Brody Riley finished with a 47.

Ripley and Halls also had individuals compete in the match, along with the OC team.

Union City will host Gibson County Monday at Poplar Meadows Country Club.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL

UC 6, Dyersburg 1

A four-run first inning propelled the Lady Tornadoes and stopped a four-game losing skid at D’burg.

Kylee McClure drove in two runs and Sophie Palmer had a pair of hits to pace the UC offense. Maddie Steward singled and scored two runs, and Annie Beth Cruce and Tenley Durham crossed the plate for the Lady Twisters.

Hadley Smith tossed a two-hit gem in the pitching circle, striking out five and issuing just two walks to notch the win.

Now 2-4 on the season, Union City next plays at Dresden Thursday.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

Henry Co. 3, UC 0

The Twister girls put up a good fight in every game but fell 25-19, 25-23, and 25-20 in Paris.

Addison Carr and Madie Theobald led Union City in assists. Breyonna Billups and Bri McBride had three aces apiece, while Theobald was good for a trio of kills. Billups recorded two kills.

HC also claimed the jayvee contest, 25-9 and 25-20.

Cricket Washburn had a nice outing with 10 assists and two aces. Allysia Davis had three kills and two blocks, while Mary Kate Sinclair served up a pair of aces.

Now 1-1, Union City will play at Hickman County (KY) next Tuesday before opening the home portion of its schedule on Aug. 24 vs. Gibson County.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Crockett Co. 28, UC 12

Union City fell short in its season opener, losing to the visiting Cavaliers.

B.J. Boyd rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown, while Brayden Marshall tossed a 27-yard scoring pass to Ayden Puckett to account for the Tornadoes’ points.

Ayden Bevis led UC defensively with six tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage. Giamonie Thomas was in on five stops. Boyd came up with a fumble recovery, and Brayson Smith had an interception.

The Twisters will play again at home Aug. 24 vs. South Gibson County.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

McKinney, Howell earn medals

Bailey placed 16th out of 73 girls, and Rushton Howell came in 25th out of 103 boys to claim medals for Union City in the Dresden Invitational Tuesday.

The Tornado boys finished seventh in the team competition.

UC runners will compete at Lexington next Tuesday.
