Union City, Tenn.–Jennifer Bruff’s 6th graders ‘sewed up’ the 2022-23 school year with a lesson that will serve students well into adulthood.

Looking to share a simple but long-lost skill, Bruff guided the Union City Middle Schoolers on how to sew a button on any garment.

The longtime UC School System math teacher explained how she introduced the process to her classes, which quickly took to the challenge.

“I told them I was going to show them how to do something that many of them had watched their grandma do,” she chuckled. “And I learned from my grandma.

“I also let them know it was something that would save them some money down the road.”

Students enthusiastically mastered the task after receiving extensive safety protocols from Bruff, who was assisted by Regina Hendon with the project.

“They really took to it and wanted to add other stitches to fabric,” the teacher claimed. “The boys actually loved it just as much as the girls, and I believe they got great satisfaction in knowing they could do something like this just as effectively as the girls could.

“And what started out as something to keep their attention in the final days turned out to be something they can use the rest of their lives.”
