Union City, Tenn.–Reading has never been more popular at Union City Elementary School.

The annual UCES Book Fair has drawn even larger-than-usual crowds this week, culminated by Grandparents Day Thursday.

The school library was packed with students and members of their families, some seeking a special book and others simply scouring through the plethora of other options that included school supplies, journals, and posters.

The wildly celebrated event is typically the largest fund-raiser of the year for UCES, with all money made funneled back into either the library or the school.

System-wide librarian Mindy McClanahan said each teacher received money to spend on classroom materials and, through generous donations from the community, every UCES student received at least one book from the fair.

“It’s a wonderful gesture from our community,” McClanahan said. “I’m always encouraged by the excitement of our students and the involvement of those outside the walls of our schools who help make this such a special week each year.”
