West Kentucky Crews Prepare For Another Round Of Snow Overnight

After getting a brief break from their snow-fighting efforts, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 crews are preparing to respond to another round of winter weather overnight into Monday.  An overnight clipper system could drop an inch or more of additional snow on parts of the region.

The KYTC District 1 Snow & Ice Team will be monitoring snowfall and driving conditions in the early morning hours with plans to call in highway crews as needed.

Due to the salt spread during the extreme cold Thursday through Saturday, most area highways still have a coating of salt that is available to act as pre-treatment for this approaching event.

Crews will likely be hitting the road in the pre-dawn hours to spot-treat bridges and overpasses.  Due to the low temperatures, this snow should be ideal for plowing should there be a significant accumulation.

The National Weather Service indicates most of the snow is likely to fall between about 3 a.m. and 8 a.m., CST, Monday, with ongoing flurries possible through the day Monday.  To check for forecast updates monitor area news media or go to https://www.weather.gov/pah/.

Motorists are advised to continue to slow down and use appropriate caution.

Motorists are encouraged to put the following driving tips to use:

  • Alter travel plans to avoid driving during the peak of weather activity.
  • Drive with a full tank of gas and pack an emergency car kit that contains essential items like blankets, ice scrapers, jumper cables, blankets, a flashlight, a cell phone charger, non-perishable snacks and a first aid kit should you get stranded on the road.
  • Winterize your vehicle. Check your car battery, tire pressure and tread, and brakes. Ensure your heater, defroster, headlights and windshield wipers are working properly.
  • When snow and/or ice are on roadways, drive slowly no matter what type of vehicle you drive. It takes more time and distance to stop your vehicle in poor weather, so brake early and slowly.
  • Pay attention to weather advisories and allow more time to travel for routine commutes. Expect delays.
  • Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shaded areas. These are all candidates for developing “black ice” – a thin coating of clear ice that can form on the pavement surface that may be difficult to see.
  • Maintain a safe distance from snowplows and other heavy highway equipment, and do not pass snowplows on the shoulder.
  • Eliminate distractions while driving, such as using a phone and or eating
