Paris, TN- Due to the extreme cold temperatures, TVA is requiring Paris BPU, Union City Energy Authority and Gibson Electric and all other 154 local power companies in the Valley to do rolling blackouts. TVA has experienced generation outages at its Cumberland and Bull Run plants leading to this action. In order to maintain stability of the power grid, the rotations will be done in 15-minute increments. BPU officials said, “We will continue with this action plan until TVA instructs us to do otherwise. We appreciate your understanding as we deal with the challenge of unprecedented cold temperatures.”
TVA and Paris BPU are working together during these extreme temperatures and are asking all consumers – residential, commercial, and industrial – to reduce power consumption. While this is a voluntary request, we are asking all consumers to cooperate in reducing power during this critical time.
If you are looking for a target, we would recommend 68 degrees. Otherwise, simply lowering your thermostat 1 or 2 degrees will allow you to contribute to the overall solution to load stability. You will also be reducing your energy costs with these same practices.
To maintain power across the valley, TVA is using all available resources including the purchase of available power from neighboring utilities. TVA and BPU are working around the clock to make power available to consumers.
TVA and BPU will also be cutting back on power usage in their facilities by adjusting thermostats, reducing lighting, and take other measures to reduce electricity consumption. We appreciate your cooperation during this extreme weather event.
