Paris, Tenn.–State Rep. Tandy Darby (R-76th District) spoke at the Henry County Century Farms breakfast at the fairgrounds Tuesday morning. A full breakfast was prepared by Donna Milam of Miss D’s Kitchen for some 60 Century Farm members. The Henry County Fair honors the Century Farm members each year with a meal during fair week.
Darby discussed his own experience of having grown up on the family farm in the Greenfield community. “I never thought about being in politics”, he said, but then related a story on a visit to Texas Tech with his daughter and family. A chaperone had picked them up, taken them to dinner and had had a great time visiting. “He asked me, “When are you going to give back?”
Darby said, “That question struck home. My dad said that working in the fields builds character, so I got a lot of character building.”
Graduating from high school Darby first attended Lambeth University and jokingly told the audience, “I asked about the ag program and they said they didn’t have one.” Darby played baseball for two years, made some great friends before transferring to UT Martin and graduating with an agribusiness degree.”
