UC Sports Teams Post Mixed Results

Union City, Tenn.–Kirben Thompson reached base three times and scored a pair of runs and Hayden Toon singled twice and scored two times to help the Union City Middle School baseball team beat Dyersburg 10-6 for its second win of the season Monday.

Owen Waggoner had two hits and scored a run, and Ben Howell had a hit and drove in a pair of tallies for the Tornadoes, who bounced back from an 11-5 first-game loss in the doubleheader.

Bryon Abbott scored two times and UC put up four runs in the second and third innings.

Thompson and Howell teamed up to strike out six and allow but two walks on the mound.

Thompson and Toon both had two hits in the opener, with Toon scoring twice. Waggoner got aboard three times with two hits and a walk.

Union City led 2-1 heading into the fourth before D’burg erupted for nine runs.

Jonan Vallae was the losing hurler.

The Tornadoes will play at Three Oaks Thursday.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

UC 18, Bradford 0

A 15-run third inning sent the Lady Tornadoes to a mercy-rule triumph.

Marlee Theobald went 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored to lead the UC onslaught. Alli Kate Frilling and Anna Cheatham had three hits apiece, with Cheatham driving in three runs and Frilling two.

Lainey Barker, Sophie Theobald, and Brianna McBride all had two hits each, with McBride scoring three times.

Cheatham and Sophie Theobald combined on a one-hitter and struck out eight, and Cheatham got credit for the pitching win.

Now 6-3, Union City is scheduled to play at Gibson County today and Dyersburg Thursday.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

UC 4, Peabody 2

Chandler Adams found the net twice and Marcos Landeros assisted on all four Twister goals to help Union City to its second win in three matches.

Adams’ first goal came in the opening four minutes, and Logan Elmore followed with another score before the 11-minute mark as UC took a 3-2 halftime lead. Juan Lopez accounted for the Tornadoes’ final goal in the second half.

Nolan Tucker had a pair of saves in goal for UC after the intermission.

Cohen Robinson and Joseph Lattus turned in solid defensive efforts for the winners.

The Tornadoes will open district play with a home match against Gibson County Friday at 6 p.m.

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS

UC 7, Dyersburg 1 (G)

UC 5, Dyersburg 0 (B)

Union City improved to 2-0 in both girls’ and boys’ play with

an impressive showing at D’burg.

Bertie Jenkins, Josie Ross, Emma Mobbs, and Emma Jane Rice all won in singles and doubles play for the Lady Tornadoes. Ross and Mobbs pitched shutouts on the singles side.

Grant Sinclair was a 6-0 winner for UC in boys’ singles, with the team of Kobe Kirk and Jeremy Rice posting a dominant 6-0 triumph in doubles.

Union City will travel to McCracken County Wednesday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

JCS 6, UC 2

The Tornadoes led 2-0 heading into the fifth, but JCS put up three unearned runs to take the lead and then added three more insurance tallies in the seventh to drop UC to 3-2.

Skylar Hall and Barrett Cox had two hits each for the Twisters, with Hall driving in a run. Will Ragsdale singled and had Union City’s other RBI, while Chase Norton had a hit and scored.

Landon Hauhe was charged with the pitching loss despite fanning 11 and allowing just four hits through six innings. Barrett Cox surrendered three runs in an inning of relief.

Union City is slated to host West Carroll today, with Lake County on the schedule for Wednesday as part of the L.H. Ladd Tournament.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

TCA 4, UC 3 (G)

TCA 4, UC 0 (B)

Union City’s girls dropped a close match in Jackson to Trinity Christian Academy, losing 4-3.

Shelby Bondurant won at the No. 3 singles slot (6-2) for the Lady Tornadoes. Bondurant then teamed with Annie Wade to triumph 7-5 in doubles.

Molly Kizer and Gracyn Callicott also won in doubles, posting a 7-0 score in a tie-breaker.

The UC boys came up short in all four of their matches vs. the Lions.

Gavin Pledge pushed Payton Campbell to the limit before falling 9-7, while the doubles team of Alex Del Castillo and Charleton Wisener also dropped a 9-7 decision.

Both Union City teams are 2-2 heading into the USJ Invitational this weekend.
