Union City, Tenn.–The ever-changing Tennessee weather has captured the attention of kindergarteners at Union City Elementary School.

Students there recently completed their last Knowledge unit of the season – one that focused on meteorology.

As their final project in the study, each kindergartener was assigned to put together their own seven-day forecast. They were allowed to pick the season and conditions and completed the project at home where their parents could offer suggestions.

Many students used poster board and paper to map out their forecasts. Others showed creativity, with one child making a clay model and another showing a PowerPoint presentation.

Each student stood before their classmates and presented their forecast. They included weather reports and patterns of their chosen seasons – to the delight of their supportive audiences.

“They really liked it, I believe,” said Jessica Graham, one of six kindergarten teachers in the UC System. “It was both interesting and entertaining to see that they didn’t all gravitate toward one particular season. There were just as many rainy, snowy and cold days in their forecasts as there were sunny days with 90-degree temperatures.

“I think that shows they were listening and learning when we talked about the patterns and all other factors that make up the changing weather.”
