
Paris, Tenn.–The Henry County Commission on Tuesday will honor the late Jean Palmer, who was the first African-American woman to serve as a commissioner.
Jean Palmer–whose full name was Lima Jean Howard Palmer–served two terms on the commission. She also served with great honor as a Private with the only all-female, all-African-American Women Army Corps Unit –the 6888th Postal Directory Battalion during World War II.
Her unit was deployed overseas to Birmingham, England and Rouen, France.
Mrs. Palmer passed away on February 6, 1984 at the age of 60 and is buried in Mplewood Cemetery.
A proclamation honoring her will be read at the County Commission meeting, set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, at the courthouse. Family members will be on hand for the ceremony.
