Camden, Tenn.—A young Camden mother is dead and her husband is being held for questioning in the Benton County Jail. A baby at the scene was uninjured.
Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher told WENK/WTPR that a 21-year-old woman was found dead in her home in Camden early this morning. He said her 24-year-old husband is being held on a gun charge.
The woman who was killed has been identified as Ashley Grooms. Her husband is Derek Grooms.
Christopher told us the husband was incoherent over night and investigators are waiting to question him.
Christopher said a 911 call arrived at 2:30 a.m. and dispatchers could hear voices in the background and then what they believed to be gunshots. He said neighbors also called 911 with a report of gunshots.
When officers arrived at the scene, Christopher said, they found the young woman dead. The husband was “very incoherent. He was talking out of his head. Very violent. He kicked out the window of the patrol car.”
A 14-month-old child in the house was not injured and is staying with relatives, Christopher said.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called in on the case.
