Dresden, Tenn.–Recovery operations continued in Dresden Thursday although some phases were slowed due to the rain that fell on and off during the day.
Mayor Jeff Washburn issued his daily progress report early this morning. The Dresden City Board conducted an emergency board meeting on Thursday night for the aldermen to be briefed on the status of the operations and decisions they need to be considering that will affect city government and the future of the city.
Citizens are cautioned to be leary of persons contacting them regarding repair services. Washburn said, “We have received reports of scam persons being present in the city. It is suggested that persons determine the reputation of companies and whether they are licensed and insured before paying any money for services, which may or may not be delivered.”
Streets in Dresden are basically clear of debris, but drivers are urged to continue using caution when driving due to the potential of debris falling from trucks or additional debris falling from trees.
Pickup of tree debris from the sides of streets continued on Thursday with great progress being made. The focus to date has been on removal of vegetative debris. However, beginning Monday, pickup will begin to include construction debris, which like tree debris needs to be placed beside, but not on, the street.
Electrical inspections have been conducted on all buildings in the city affected by the tornado and a determination made whether it is safe to return power to the building . This determination was made by state electrical inspectors. Many buildings will require repair work before power is restored to the structure.
Weakley County Municipal Electric and its partners in the recovery effort have been making great strides in restoring power to all areas of Dresden. Their work continued throughout the day on Thursday despite the rain. Please be extra cautious when operating vehicles or being present in areas where utility companies are operating for your safety and their safety as well.
The American Red Cross will assume responsibility of feeding the volunteers providing services in Dresden as well as persons directly impacted by the storm on Monday, December 20. The Dresden Elks Lodge will wind down it’s feeding operations on Saturday night. The Elk’s Lodge is to be applauded for stepping up and taking on this role during the early stages of the Disaster recovery effort. There also have been numerous other persons and companies that have joined in the feeding effort during the first week, too many to individually recall and name, that likewise deserve our applause and thanks for their love and generosity to this community.
The holiday work schedule for recovery volunteers will include Sunday off this week and then Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, December 24, 25, and 26, off Christmas week.
A conscientious effort is being made to identify how many people have been displaced from their homes during the storm and how many of those will potentially be permanently displaced. Details of where to report this information will be made public soon.
Information specially regarding children whose Christmas will be directly impacted by the tornado is also needed. Watch this page for information where to report this information.
