Looking to improve on her first-day score in the Class A Girls’ State Tournament Friday, Molly Kizer did just that.
The Union City High School sophomore shot 17 strokes better on Day 2 Friday to finish in a tie for 39th place at the Sevierville Golf Club’s Highland 1 course.
Kizer posted a 105 Friday in a round that featured four pars and two bogeys. She largely stayed away from the big numbers that haunted her the day before to move up three places on the individual leader board.
Kizer shaved 13 strokes off her back-nine score from Thursday, shooting a 50.
She parred the 139-yard 11th hole for the second straight day and also parred No. 13 – a 134-yard par-three.
On the front-nine, Kizer made par on the final two holes – scoring a three and a five. The par on No. 9 came on longest hole (467 yards) on the par-70 course.
“I thought it was fairly evident that she got more and more comfortable the more she played on the course,” UC head coach Jason Qualls said. “She made some quality golf shots on the back-nine.
“No doubt the experience on this stage will only benefit her moving forward. With two more years to go, she obviously has the potential and goal to get back here.”
Gordonsville’s Sophie Linder won the overall tournament championship with an 8-under score of 132.
Summertown won the team championship for the fourth straight year, firing a two-day total of 4-over par, 284.
