Dyersburg Man Charged With Trying To Kidnap Child

Dyersburg, Tenn.–A Dyersburg man –wearing a blonde wig and in possession of a braided rope–is accused of trying to kidnap a child in a local park.
Monday evening around 8 p.m., Dyersburg police responded to a report of an attempted kidnapping at the Forked Deer River Park. Officers were informed that a man wearing a blonde wig approached a man and woman who were at the park with a 2-year-old child and attempted to take the child. The suspect was pushed down by the male and chased away from the area.
Officers were informed the suspect, later identified as Russell Barton, age 53, Dyersburg, was at the H & S Market on South Main. Officers located Barton and took him into custody without incident. Barton was still in possession of the wig and a braided rope.
Barton was charged with criminal attempt to commit kidnapping and was jailed. Barton appeared in Dyersburg City Court, and is being held on a $25,000 bond pending court action Friday at 9:00 a.m.
