Paris, Tenn.–A Kentucky man was arrested on charges of attempted robbery after he showed a bank employee a note demanding money–and then asked a Henry County Sheriff’s deputy for help robbing the bank when that didn’t work.

Scotty Burton, age 67, of Lynnville, Ky., was attempting to rob the Security Bank & Trust annex building on W. Washington St. He is being held on $100,000 bond at the Henry County Jail.

Paris Police Investigator Jeramye Whitaker told RadioNWTN that Burton entered the annex building and handed the employee the note. Whitaker said Burton told her to give him money and not to put a dye pack in it. The employee was able to talk Burton into leaving the building without incident and she locked the door behind him, Whitaker said.

Burton then saw Cpl. Forrest Kemp outside in his patrol car and approached him, asking him for help in robbing the bank, Whitaker said. Burton then pulled his hand from his pocket, revealing a semi-automatic handgun. Whitaker said the handgun turned out to be loaded.

With assistance from Sheriff’s Sgt. Ricky Wade, Cpl. Kemp placed Burton in custody. His vehicle also was seized.
