McKenzie, TN — McKenzie Taproom & Restaurant has officially been sold to local owner Elizabeth Richardson. The transition marks a continued investment in Carroll County and reinforces a growing model of sustainable, community-driven development in rural West Tennessee. The business is located at 27 Broadway and has been a prime mover in the revitalization of downtown McKenzie.
Originally co-founded by Anne-Marie Tanner, the Taproom was part of a broader initiative to restore underutilized properties and establish thriving small businesses in rural communities. What began as a building in great disrepair has been revitalized into a fully operational restaurant and event space.
“This is exactly what we set out to do,” Tanner said. “There are huge risks in starting a business—especially when you’re taking on an older building that needs significant rehabilitation. My team and I take on that risk, invest the time and resources to bring the space back to life, build a strong and stable business model, and then hand it off to someone local who can carry it forward.
My goal has always been the same… no more boarded up downtowns in West Tennessee! We took a building in really rough condition and turned it into a locally owned and operated small business. Now, it’s in the hands of someone who lives here, believes in this community, and will continue to grow it.”
Richardson, who owns and operates a farm in Henry County, brings a deep connection to the region and a strong understanding of the local community. She plans to build on that foundation with continued investment in the property and business. She has already outlined plans to expand into the adjacent building, creating additional space to accommodate more patrons and enhance the overall experience.
“Liz already has some really big plans, including continued rehab and expanding into the adjacent building to create more space and accommodate more people,” Tanner added. “That’s exactly what you want to see—local ownership continuing to invest, grow, and serve the community. This is an exciting new chapter!”
The transition highlights a replicable approach to rural revitalization—one that focuses on restoring buildings, creating sustainable businesses, and placing them in the hands of local owners who are committed to long-term community growth.
McKenzie Taproom & Restaurant will continue to operate with the same commitment to quality food, hospitality, and community engagement under Richardson’s leadership.
