Tuesday was a stellar day for Union City’s spring sports teams.

The Tornadoes won in soccer, girls’ and boys’ golf, and in both ends of a baseball doubleheader on the middle school level.

Also noteworthy were victories by the high school Purple and Gold in girls’ and boys’ tennis and softball.

The following are highlights from those contests, with track results to be added when they become available later in the day:

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER

UC 7, Fulton City 0

Union City blanked the homestanding Bulldogs for the second time in eight days, following last week’s 8-0 shutout with another dominant performance.

Adrian Henderson, Alan Martinez, and Jack Walker each scored twice for the Tornadoes, who improved to 2-5 on the season. Layne Jorge accounted for UC’s opening goal.

Martinez and Ryelee Byars were credited with assists for the Twisters, who led 4-0 at the intermission and then cruised in the second half.

Fulton City was unable to attempt a shot on goal against the Union City defense.

The Tornadoes are scheduled to visit Obion County on Thursday.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 7-8, Greenfield 1-5

The Tornadoes have now won three straight and crept to within one game (6-7) of the .500 mark with a twinbill sweep of visiting Greenfield.

Bo Bondurant drove in a pair of runs, and Boston Riley and Chance Williams scored two times apiece for UC in Game 1. Kason Medley singled, scored, and drove in a run, while Jackson Williams and Sam Bailey accounted for RBIs for the victors.

Bailey spun an impressive one-hitter, allowing just four baserunners in five innings to pick up the mound win.

A three-run second inning helped Union City erase a slim deficit and claim the nightcap.

Angel Tinajero went 2-for-3 with a double, scored three runs, and drove in two to pace the Twister offense. Riley also stroked a two-bagger and had two ribbies, while Brody Fields finished with two hits and two runs scored. Medley, too, scored twice.

Medley and Fields combined for the pitching victory, each hurling two frames. None of the ‘Jackets’ five runs were earned.

Union City’s next outing will be April 13 at home against Bradford.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GOLF

UC 115, Obion County 124 (G)

UC 191, Obion County 224 (B)

Lili Ann Petty was the match medalist for the Union City girls with a 48, while Sam Kissell’s 41 topped the boys’ leaderboard as the Tornadoes beat Obion County.

McKinley Reed added 67 to the Lady Tornadoes’ total, which was nine shots better than OC.

In boys’ play, Holt Nicodemis registered a 46, William Tohn carded a 51, and Hudson Reeves came in with a 53 as Union City was 33 strokes better than the Rebels.

UC’s record is now 2-0 on the boys’ side and 1-0 in girls’ team competition.

The Tornado teams will host OC and Christ Classical Academy of Dyersburg on April 13 at Poplar Meadows Country Club.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

UC 6, Peabody 5

The Lady Tornadoes squared their district record at 2-2 after holding off Trenton on the Tide’s turf.

UC (4-7 overall) built a 6-0 lead before Peabody scored five times in the fourth inning to get within a single run. Both teams put up zeros in the final three frames.

Addison Carr went 2-for-3, reached base three times, and scored twice for the Twister girls. Sisters Mattie and Hadley Smith each doubled, while Heaven Marshall ripped a triple and drove home a run.

Kylie Mayes got aboard twice via a single and a walk, and scored.

Mattie Smith went the distance in the circle, squaring her record at 4-4.

Union City will welcome Westview to Graham Park’s Eddlemon-Hawks Field on Thursday at 5 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

UC 7, Westview 0 (G)

UC 4, Westview 3 (B)

A tie-breaker win in doubles play by Grant Sinclair and Kipton Powers helped the Union City boys survive and remain unbeaten in district play.

Sinclair/Powers won 7-0 to triumph 9-8 at the No. 2 doubles spot, and UC improved to 11-1 overall and 9-0 in the league standings.

The Tornadoes’ top-seeded doubles tandem of Kobe Kirk and Byron Abbott was also victorious (8-4), helping to offset three UC losses in singles play. Sinclair (8-2) and Camden Dawkins (8-2) were the Twisters’ individual winners.

Union City’s girls (12-0, 9-0) were in complete control, not giving up more than two games in five singles matches, while winning both doubles encounters convincingly.

Bertie Jenkins, Allie Vincent, and Stella Turner all posted 8-1 victories, and the doubles team of Vincent and Briley Kate McKinney rang up an 8-0 victory shutout at the No. 2 slot.

It was all Martin thereafter, though, with the Chargers erupting for nine tallies in the fourth to seal the mercy-rule verdict.

Preston Creswell was touched for nine earned runs and was charged with the pitching loss. Jackson Vowell and Japheth Caldwell had brief relief stints.
