Dresden, Tenn.–Law enforcement officials were made aware this afternoon of a threatening message that appeared in a group chat among middle school students in Weakley County.
Sheriff Terry McDade said investigators immediately began an investigation and were able to determine where the message originated. The student believed to be responsible was interviewed in the presence of his/her parents. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that the message was not intended to be an actual threat.
However, due to the nature of the message, the student has been charged under Tennessee Code Annotated §39-16-517, Threats of Mass Violence on School Property.
At this time, investigators have found no evidence of any credible threat to students, staff members, or school facilities.
The safety of all Weakley County students remains a top priority. The Sheriff and Deputies of the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office take all threats involving schools seriously and will thoroughly investigate any report to ensure the continued safety of our schools and community.
