From Fort Donelson National Battlefield in Dover:
Winter Weather Closure Update❄️
All park areas will remain closed to the public through at least Tuesday January 27, 2026. This includes both vehicular and pedestrian access.
Yes, it is a winter wonderland in and around Fort Donelson National Battlefield.
Yes, the weather of this week, including near zero temperatures, and snow and ice accumulations, are comparable to battle conditions for much the February 1862 Battle of Fort Donelson.
But no, you cannot dress in mid-nineteenth century wool, put on traction-less brogan shoes, grab your pack, haversack, and muzzleloading rifle and attempt to experience that of a Fort Donelson participant. At least not on the national battlefield – and with the current ice-covered landscape and forecasted temperatures, we still do not suggest doing such.
The entire battlefield landscape, including paved surfaces such as roads, parking, and trails, are covered in a substantial layer of snow topped with ice.
These conditions, coupled with sub-freezing temperatures, mean we will be unable to open the park to the public until the ice melts enough for removal on primary surfaces, or it does so on its own.
We will continue to post updates here and on our website at https://home.nps.gov/fodo/planyourvisit/conditions.htm
We hope all of you are affected by this storm and cold weather will remain safe and warm.
