Union City Elementary School first graders paid tribute to veterans who’ve served and others who continue to do so with a heartfelt musical program on Tuesday.

Students performed a variety of patriotic songs – one while waving American flags, another using sign language – during three performances of the Veteran’s Day presentation.

Family and UCES classmates were treated to the performances that began with students leading those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. Veterans present were recognized and given thank-you notes for their service, after which many families enjoyed a variety of photo opportunities.

During the final performance, students recognized two veterans “of their own” in physical education teacher/coach Nelson Youngblood and custodian Nolan Sims.

UCES music teacher Katie Tohn, who prepared the group and directed the performances, was touched by the young students’ understanding of freedom and the sacrifices made for it.

“I was really surprised at how personal it was to them, and how emotional some of them became when talking about how blessed we are due to the efforts of our veterans,” Tohn said. “They understand what a veteran is. They know we have freedoms we take for granted.

“Whether it’s the freedom to be able to go to school, or to worship, and simply to go outside, they are well aware we have things that many others don’t. It was touching for me to hear them talk about that before and during our rehearsals.

“This (program) was just our effort to thank and acknowledge our veterans for their service, sacrifice, and commitment to our nation and our schools. Their example and integrity inspire each of us.”
