Huntingdon, Tenn.–A dedication ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, at the corner of High Street and East Main Street in Huntingdon for Carl Mann. Born in Huntingdon in 1942, he began his career singing in church, then later as a teenager formed his own band. Carl is known for his biggest hit –a rockabilly version of Nat King Cole’s “Mona Lisa” and was one of the last artists to be signed by Sun Records owner Sam Phillips.
Country singer Carl Mann passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at age 78 in Jackson.
Carl Mann was a native of Huntingdon, Tennessee and was a prodigy appearing on the radio on nearby WDXI in Jackson, at age 10. Inspired by the sounds of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, the singer, guitarist and pianist had his own band at age 12 and first recorded at age 14.
His 1957 single for Jaxon Records was the teen-themed “Gonna Rock and Roll Tonight.”
