The Union City High School marching band faced a stern test at the Gibson County Marching Invitational Saturday.

And the Purple People passed with flying colors.

Conquering the weather elements and putting on what director Jason Deem said was “their best performance of the season,” UC was rewarded with multiple awards at the competition at GC High School.

Union City was crowned Small Division Grand Champion after finishing first in Band, Color Guard and Drum Major categories in the preliminary competition. The Marching Tornadoes were second in their class in Percussion.

In the finals competition, UC earned second place in Color Guard, fourth place in Band and Drum Major, and fifth place in Percussion.

“There were multiple weather challenges, and we moved up our performance time because of the forecast,” Deem continued. “That might have affected us a little in our first performance, but our students came out in the finals and were outstanding.

“This is a testament to our kids ‘rising up’ to the challenge and achieving success. Overall, it was a great day for the Union City High School band.”

UC will compete in the Crockett County Invitational this Saturday, taking the field for their first performance at noon.

The Purple People will close out their competition season on Saturday, Nov. 2, by vying for honors in the Division II State Championship at Stewarts Creek High School in Smyrna.
