Union City hardly broke a sweat in the opening round of the District 13A volleyball tournament.

The Lady Tornadoes overwhelmed a seemingly uninterested Humboldt squad 3-0 Monday evening at Marty Sisco Gymnasium to advance to the semifinals of the postseason event.

UC’s 21st win in 25 matches this season sends the second-seeded Twister girls into tonight’s semifinals against No. 3 Halls at Gibson County High School. Should the Purple and Gold win again in the 7 o’clock match, they would play in Thursday’s district championship round and secure a spot in next week’s regional tourney.

Union City defeated Halls twice during the regular season, 3-0 and 3-1.

The Lady Tornadoes simply weren’t challenged by Humboldt on Monday in winning 25-3, 25-7, and 25-9.

With Gracie Sims (15) and Addison Carr (10) each stringing together long stretches of service aces – many falling harmlessly between Viking players – UC built commanding leads early in each game.

Sims also had a team-high 14 kills, while Madie Theobald finished with 16 assists. Ca’Lae Ervin tacked on five aces for the Twisters, who totaled 35 in all.

Union City was charged with just 12 errors in the match.
