In the ‘survive and advance’ world of the postseason, both Union City golf teams are moving on to the next round.

The Lady Tornadoes and Twisters placed among the Top 3 teams in the District 14A Tournament at Persimmon Hills on Monday to qualify for the Region 7A tourney next week in Decaturville.

UC’s girls finished second among seven teams, while the Tornado boys were third in a 13-team field amid wet playing conditions on the Sharon course.

The Lady Twister tandem of freshman Annie Beth Cruce and sophomore Stella Turner combined to shoot 229 in the 18-hole competition. Cruce finished fourth individually, registering a 52-59 for a total of 101.

Turner shot 55 on the front-nine and 65 on the back-side for a 120.

Union City trailed only district champ McKenzie (186) in the team standings. The Lady Tornadoes’ score was better than Westview (239), Milan (244), Gleason (262), South Fulton (276), and Clarksburg (277).

Brody Riley fired a 1-over par 73 to finish as the individual runner-up for the Twister boys, who came in with a 323 as a team.

Riley shot a two-under 33 on the back nine and a 40 on the par-37 front nine. McKenzie’s Nolan Fawcett (71) bested Riley for the individual championship.

Gavin McGuire (38-38) carded a 76 and tied for fifth on the individual leader board before settling for sixth after a playoff.

Coop Frankum shot 83 (43-39), and Paul Martin Tohn finished with a 92 (45-47) to round out the Twister scorecard. Stephen Herrell (50-45) came in with a 95.

McKenzie (311) completed a sweep of the district championships, also winning the boys’ title. Westview (318) was second.

Rounding out the field were Milan (344), Camden (377), Obion Central (378), Huntingdon (384), Greenfield (437), Dresden (439), South Fulton, Clarksburg, Gleason, and West Carroll.

Next week’s Region 7A event will be held at the Tennessee River Golf Club on Monday.
