Murray, Ky.–Calloway County E-911 Tobacco Barn Registry is being created.
To cut down on false fire alarms during tobacco curing season, E-911 is creating a registry of local tobacco barns. Many residents mistake the normal white smoke from dark-fired tobacco for actual barn fires, leading to unnecessary emergency calls.
Farmers can now register their barns—listing locations, ventilation systems, and contact info—so first responders have the details they need before arriving on scene. The effort, led by E-911’s Fiona Branham, aims to improve response times and prevent confusion next season.
The barn location will also be given a 911 address if it is not located on residential property, which also is beneficial when an emergency arises, and a quick response is needed by first responders.
