Longtime Union City Elementary teacher Thel Taylor enjoyed one of the many special perks of being a grandfather at the school recently.
Taylor, currently the IT person at UCES, visited first-grade classes to share stories of his Rotary Club-sponsored travel to Europe this past summer.
Among the members of his inquisitive audience was his grandson, Coleson. Coleson was part of the group that connected with the first-grade reader Snapshots, which features stories about travel and sites in the United Kingdom.
Thel, who was a chaperon on the trip with his wife, Kim — also a veteran UCES teacher — brought the lessons to life by showing photos of famous landmarks. Among those were Big Ben, the Changing of the Guard, and the red double-decker buses of London.
“Mr. Taylor gave our students a real-world glimpse into the places they are reading about and sparked curiosity and excitement for learning,” UCES first-grade teacher Stephanie Sisco said.
