You CAN go home again.
Just a few months after graduating from Union City High School, Gavin Morgan returned to his fifth-grade teacher’s class to share about his decision to pursue a career as a licensed journeyman electrician.
Speaking to UC Middle School students on his day off, Morgan told Rhonda Clendenin’s 8th-grade Career Explorations classes that he’s currently working as a paid apprentice at Amteck in Dyersburg after a four-week classroom stretch.
Amteck is a nationwide company with several offices throughout the United States that provides training and experience on a four-year path designed to provide ready applicants the skills to become a licensed electrician.
Morgan, the son of UC Schools educators Lance and Julie Morgan, explained the differences between trade school and working as an apprentice during his presentation. He also detailed his training in fiber optics, what his duties are in a typical day, and the advancement opportunities that will be available to him after completion of the Amteck program.
Gavin stressed to students the importance of a good work ethic – typically formed during middle and high school. He stated the understanding of being a good investment for one’s company, and the need for safety with equipment and training.
One of a handful of UCHS graduates to participate in the program, he was especially passionate when saying, “There is no limit on access to what you can do. There is a job for everyone. You are the only one who can get in your way.”
Clendenin, who taught Morgan as a 5th grader in the UC System, was thrilled to have witnessed firsthand one of her most basic lessons.
“I have always told my students that it’s important to give back to your community when you choose a career path, and I was grateful that Gavin spent his day off in my classroom,” she said. “I think that sharing his career path and goals piqued the interest of several of our 8th-grade boys.
“I like to share as many options and career availabilities as possible so that my students see that there is something for everyone. Daily, I tell them we all have a purpose to fulfill.
“Gavin did a great job on his presentation. My hope is that he inspired my current students to be the best that they can be, realize the opportunities available to them after high school, and one day give back to their community.”
