YER COUNTY, Tenn. – The driver of a suspected stolen car was shot late Monday night by deputies in Dyer County, the sheriff’s office said, and the TBI is investigating.

According to the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 10 p.m., when officers saw a car believed to have been stolen from the town of Newbern. The driver failed to stop when they tried to pull it over, they said.

“The vehicle was subsequently disabled and the suspect produced a rifle,” Dyer County Sheriff’s deputies said in a statement.

About 30 minutes later, two deputies fired shots at the driver “for reasons that are under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.” The driver was identified as a 44-year-old man. He was airlifted to a hospital for treatment; his name has not been released.

Deputies were not injured.

DCSO said the TBI took over the investigation at the request of the 29th District Attorney General.
