Union City continued to stack volleyball wins with a 3-0 shutout of Bradford on Monday.
The Lady Tornadoes breezed to their eighth victory in nine matches, posting scores of 25-9, 25-7, and 25-15.
Assistant coach Abby Suiter – filling in for head coach Jessica Graham (sick) – used reserves extensively in the third game as UC overwhelmed its District 13A foe.
Seven different Lady Tornadoes (Clare Atwill, Addison Carr, Ca’Lae Ervin, Gracie Sims, Crickett Washburn, and Sadie Kern) served up two or more aces for the victors.
Sims also had a team-high nine kills, while Madie Theobald distributed a dozen assists. Washburn was good for four kills.
Union City plays at Lake County today, the jayvee match beginning at 5 with varsity play to follow.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL
UC 19, Ridgemont 1
The Lady Tornadoes won their fourth straight game since a season-opening loss.
The contest was essentially a walk in the park for UC, which drew 19 walks in recording the two-inning victory. Seven Twister players reached twice each via free passes.
Ella Grace Howell scored three times for Union City, while Amanada McPhearson, Tenley Durham, Keatyn Hall, Elly Grace Davis, and Addy McKinnis crossed the plate twice each.
Hall and Austyn Dilday had doubles in the Lady Tornado outburst, while Davis drove in a pair of runs.
Neither Dilday nor Charlie Smith allowed a hit in the pitching circle for UC.
Union City hosts Hillcrest today at 5 p.m.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Brody Fields (8:28) was second overall, just ahead of teammate Cooper Waggoner (8:52) for UCMS in the Charger Invitational at Martin on Monday.
The two Tornado runners helped their squad to a fourth-place finish among 25 teams and 131 participants.
Will D. McKinnis (9:55) placed 28th on the 1.5-mile course for the Twisters. Owen Shannon (54th) and Walton Harder (95th) were also part of the event.
Stella Graham posted a time of 11:23 to finish 22nd for the UC girls. Chloe Baumgardner (11:26) was 24th. Ella Duncan (15:42) came in 55th in the jayvee race that had 95 runners.
Union City is scheduled to run next at Milan on Sept. 2.
HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
Brody Riley tied for fourth individually with a solid one-over-par 73 for the Union City boys, who placed sixth among 18 teams in the annual Trojan Classic at The Farms in Dyersburg.
Riley’s score was just five shots off the torrid pace set by Dyer County’s Beau Thurmon.
The Tornadoes totaled 331 as a team, trailing meet titlist Jackson Christian School (301) and DC (313). UC’s score was better than Brighton, Crockett County, Westview, TCA, Milan, and Peabody, among others.
Gavin McGuire continued his good play for the Twisters with a 75. Coop Frankum shot 91, Paul Martin Tohn finished with a 92, and Stephen Herrell came in with a 106.
The Union City girls were also part of a large field that included players from 15 schools.
Annie Beth Cruce came in with a 116, and teammate Stella Turner scored 117 to account for the Lady Tornadoes’ 233 total.
TCA claimed first place with a score of 177.
Union City will play again today at The Farms, competing against Dyer County.
