Calloway County, Ky.–A homeowner was seriously injured with burns and his home was destroyed by fire last night. The Red Cross will be assisting the homeowner after he is released from the burn unit at the hospital.
Saturday night at approximately 9:00pm, Calloway County 911 Communications Center dispatched Calloway County Fire & Rescue to the 4800 block of Hwy 121 North in the Stella community for a report of a structure on fire.
The department said initial reports from 911 callers advised this was a shop that was fully engulfed in flames at the time they were toned out. Upon first units arriving on scene, they found the shop to be also lived in by the owner, who was out of the structure walking around at the time of arrival.
Fire crews immediately initiated an attack to contain the fire and prevent spread to other nearby structures before moving inside to begin fully extinguishing the fire.
While battling the fire, it was discovered that the homeowner had sustained burn injuries. Murray-Calloway County EMS was requested & responded to the scene. After evaluation, the patient was determined to have first-degree burns. AirEvac was requested & transported him from Murray-Calloway County Hospital to a specialized burn unit. At this time, CCFR does not have an update on his condition.
Due to the structure being declared uninhabitable, CCFR requested the American Red Cross to assist the homeowner once he is released from the hospital.
CCFR worked for approximately three hours to extinguish the fire; the department responded with 2 pumpers, 6 tanker trucks, 3 support vehicles & a command vehicle with 29 firefighters who responded.
Firefighters said, “We want to give a big shoutout to our members for the quick & professional work they did to extinguish the fire & protect the surrounding houses. Our department also thanks the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office deputies for assisting with traffic control, ensuring firefighters could safely operate on scene. We offer our thoughts & prayers to the homeowner & his family during this difficult time.”
