Union City’s season-opening volleyball match was everything head coach Jessica Graham had hoped for.
One of the biggest crowds in program history watched the Lady Tornadoes begin their 2025 season in impressive fashion with a 3-0 victory over District 13A rival Trenton Monday at Marty Sisco Gymnasium.
UC – looking to return to the Class A state tournament with a wealth of experience back from last year’s squad that won a program-record 18 matches – was in control from start to finish while beating Peabody 25-13, 25-10, and 25-16.
“We quickly got over any first-match jitters, and I was proud of how we played,” said Graham, who has led the Twister girls to the state tournament in two of her five seasons at the coaching helm.
“Addison Carr (5 kills, three service aces) and Crickett Washburn (9 aces, three kills) played well and had some huge points for us.
“And I was so proud of our student section and the support they gave our girls. The entire crowd – which was one of the biggest we’ve ever had – was just awesome, and we look forward to having them come out all season to cheer on our girls.”
Returning All-Stater Madie Theobald was credited with 14 assists for Union City, while Gracie Sims posted a team-high seven kills. Clare Atwill came up with seven digs, and Ca’Lae Ervin had five kills.
Union City will play at home again on Thursday, welcoming Westview. The jayvee match is scheduled to begin at 5 with the varsity to follow.
