Assistant Fire Chief Lauded For Off-Duty Heroism

Martin, Tenn.–On the afternoon of July 26, 2025, around 4 pm, Martin Assistant Chief Jason Hauhe and his family were traveling west on Gardner-Hyndsver Road when he noticed an individual in the road waving for help.
Upon exiting his vehicle, Hauhe realized that a vehicle had run off the road and struck a tree. The vehicle caught fire in the engine compartment and was spreading to the rest of the vehicle. Assistant Chief Hauhe noticed an individual who was still in the car and was unable to exit.
Without regard for his safety, Assistant Chief Hauhe, relying on his training, entered the passenger compartment, released the seat belt, and pulled the individual to safety. Without the heroic effort, there was a great possibility that a life would have been lost.
Fire department officials have commended the action, reminding the public that for many first responders, the job never truly ends. “Even off the clock, our firefighters are always ready to serve,” said Chief Jamie Summers.
Assistant Chief Jason Hauhe will receive a Life-Saving medal at a future City of Martin Board Meeting and will be publicly recognized for his heroic efforts at that time.
