MURRAY, Ky. – Emily Freeman, of Branson, Missouri, recently won the Lady Bass Anglers Association Women’s Pro Bass Tournament on Bull Shoals Lake, Arkansas. Freeman earned her bachelor’s degree from Murray State in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, and was a member of the Murray State Bass Anglers. Now being a student in Murray State’s Fisheries Biology graduate program studying the crappie spawn in Kentucky Lake, she fishes in the women’s pro series. Her graduate advisor, Dr. Timothy Spier, Murray State associate professor of fish ecology and graduate program coordinator, said he is proud of Freeman’s hard work and dedication. “Obviously, Emily is an amazing angler, but she is also an excellent student,” said Spier. “She has worked very hard on her thesis and in her classes, and we are all very proud of her! I’m sure she is going to do even more great things once she leaves Murray State.” On average there are about 60 women anglers around the country that fish this trail, where there are about 30 boaters total and 30 co-anglers, Freeman said. This is her rookie season with the Lady Bass Anglers Association, and Bull Shoals Lake was her first win with this trail. Freeman started fishing when she was a kid with her dad being her biggest influence because he is a fishing guide. “I carried that passion to high school fishing then fished in college,” she said. “Now fishing at this level, having this win is very exciting to me and something that was a long time coming. I couldn’t have done it without the Murray State fishing team getting me up to this point. Also having the support from all the women anglers, it’s really nice to have a safe spot to go to and enjoy the competition of tournament fishing.”
