It will be hosted by the National Park Service and the Stewart County Veterans Affairs Office, with this year’s program facilitated with the Carl E. Wallace Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4730 and the Douglas M. Lyons American Legion, Dover Post 72. Also participating will be other veteran organizations, local civic, and scouting organizations.
Guest speaker for the program will be Command Sergeant Major Greg Patton, United States Army, retired. Over the span of 28 years, Patton has held every leadership position from fire team leader to BCT Command Sergeant Major. Additional positions include HALO Team Leader, Scout Platoon Sergeant, Observer Controller, Chief Light Fighter School, and BN and BDE Command Sergeant Major.
A recipient of numerous awards, Memorial Day holds a special place for Patton. During his last deployment to Afghanistan, he not only lost many of his Soldiers on the battlefield, but he also lost his Son, SSG James R Patton, on April 18, 2010, in Tikrit, Iraq. James served with the 3rd Ranger Bn 75th Ranger Regiment, where CSM Patton began his Army Career.
“We invite veterans, active-duty service members, their families, and the public to join us as we pause to remember the millions of service men and women who have died in the protection of our nation over the nation’s 250 years, providing for, and maintaining the freedoms that we cherish,” according to Brian McCutchen, Superintendent of the Fort Donelson National Cemetery, and the Fort Donelson National Battlefield.
