Robert M. “Stig” Mathis

 Mr. Robert M. “Stig” Mathis, age 85, of Big Rock, TN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18, 2025. Born on November 5, 1939, in Stewart County, he was the beloved son of Virgil and Virdie Kennedy Mathis.

Fondly known as “Stig” to all who knew him, he had a deep love for the outdoors and took great joy in the thrill of hunting big buck deer, catching a big bass, and bird hunting with his Big Rock buddies.  He also enjoyed a good western movie or watching reruns of Matt Dillon.

Throughout his life, he worked as a laborer in various factories. Even after retirement, he continued working at the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, where he was proud to receive the “Ten Season Service Award.”

Stig was a longtime member of Big Rock Baptist Church, where he found joy in fellowship, shared meals, and meaningful friendships with his church family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Virdie Mathis; his brother, Henry “Tootie” Mathis; and his sister, Diane Mathis.

Stig leaves behind cousins, dear friends and his church family who will miss him deeply. He is also survived by his cousin and devoted caregiver, Angela and John Elliott with whom he shared many cherished memories in recent years. Stig was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be from 9:30 until the time of the funeral on Friday, May 23rd.  The funeral will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, May 23, 2025 at Anglin Funeral Home with Bro. David Whitehead officiating.  Burial will follow at Smith Cemetery, Big Rock, TN, his friends will be serving as pallbearers and James Settle will serve as an Honorary Pallbearer.
