Dyer County, Tenn.–A State of Emergency and Mandatory Evacuation Order has been issued for Bogota, Tennessee and the surrounding communities of Dyer County. County Mayor David Quick announced on the Dyer County 911 Facebook page that a mandatory evacuation order was put in place Monday afternoon after the possibility of flooding was believed to be at dangerous levels.

“Your safety is our top priority, and due to imminent threat of flooding, we are ordering the immediate evacuation of all residents from the East Side of Highway 78, including the community of Cocklebur and surrounding communities in Bogota, TN,” Quick said.

Mayor Quick said residents should do as follows:

  • Evacuate immediately: Do not delay. Gather your belongings and leave the area as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Follow designated evacuation routes: Highway 78 N.
  • Go to the designated evacuation shelter: First United Methodist Church of Dyersburg.
  • Contact Emergency Management Director, Chief James Medling for updates: 731-589-7573
  • Bring essential supplies
  • Secure your property: Close windows and doors, turn off utilities, etc.
  • Do not return to the area until instructed to do so by authorities.

Quick said the following would be the consequences of not complying with the evacuation order:

  • Emergency responders may not be able to assist you past this point.
  • You may be personally liable for any damages or injuries sustained.
  • This is a lawful order.
Dyer County officials said further: Our hearts go out to the citizens of Bogota and Southtown who are currently facing devastating flooding of their homes and properties. This situation is critical not only for homeowners but also for our local farmers who are impacted by these conditions.
Currently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have setup a command Post at the Dyer County Sheriff’s Training Center and the American Red Cross has set up a command post with equipment to make sand bags at the Bogota School.
We want to assure you that our dedicated law enforcement officers, dispatchers, highway department, emergency management team, fire departments, and community leaders are working tirelessly to monitor the situation and provide assistance wherever possible.
As you navigate through this challenging time, please keep us informed of any unmet needs you may have – we are here to help.
The US Army Corps of Engineers has projected an additional foot of water before the Forked Deer River crests, and the waters are expected to recede slowly.
Important Safety Reminder: Many roads are closed due to flooding, and it is extremely dangerous to drive through any water – even if it appears shallow. Your safety is our top priority, so please stay alert and avoid these areas.
