The Tennessee Army National Guard made its pitch to Union City High School seniors recently with its annual symposium at Discovery Park of America.

UCHS students spent the day at DPA during the park’s 2025 Military Expo. Military history and current TNARNG soldiers were part of the day’s activities, and students were also informed of career opportunities in the Tennessee Army National Guard.

Additionally, the Union City contingent heard about the availability of college tuition reimbursement to higher education institutions in Tennessee, which is made possible by TNARNG.

Administration and selected teachers from UCHS served as chaperones for the senior group, which witnessed military enactments, equipment displays, and presentations by special guests.

The TNARNG serves as both a state militia force under the governor’s command and a reserve component of the U.S. Army under federal authority. It plays a dual role in responding to emergencies in Tennessee and supporting national military operations.

“Educating the public is a big part of our mission, and I can think of no better event in the state more closely aligned,” Johnathan Cadwell, senior recruiting and retention specialist, said in a prepared statement.

J.C. Stahlman’s The Living Historians was on-site throughout the Settlement, bringing history to life with interactive demonstrations and storytelling. Through drill demonstrations, maneuvers and battlefield commands, The Living Historians provide an engaging educational experience, allowing guests to witness history firsthand.

“This event provides many unique opportunities for guests to engage with military history in a hands-on and meaningful way,” said Michael Larkin, director of education and museum experience for Discovery Park, in a release. “Whether you’re interested in historical reenactments, modern military technology, or personal stories from service members, this year’s Military Expo has something for everyone.”
