The City of Martin and Martin Parks & Recreation are announcing upcoming improvements to the Martin Recreation Complex. Thanks to funding secured through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), the city will soon begin much-needed enhancements to the park.
Bids for the project were recently accepted and will be formally approved at the April City Board meeting. Construction is expected to begin in May. These improvements will include a brand-new playground, new pickleball courts, and a resurfaced walking trail. The grant application was completed through a joint effort by the City of Martin’s Economic & Community Development office and Martin Parks & Recreation.
” CDBG funds for public park improvements is a new concept. Historically this program has been limited to water/sewer projects and firetruck purchases. There has been a learning curve on the frontend, but we made it to the construction phase, and I am looking forward to getting the pickleball courts built, the new playground equipment installed, and the walking trail improvements completed. Hopefully, this will all be complete this summer.“, added Brad Thompson, Director of Economic & Community Development for the City of Martin.
The new playground will replace the existing one, which has served the Martin community for many years. This updated play area will create one large, inclusive space featuring new equipment, seating, and shade structures.
“The current Kiwanis playground has been a well-used amenity in the city for the past 20 years. We are excited to update the equipment and continue offering this playground for everyone to enjoy.”, said Alisse Kirk, Office Manager Martin Parks & Recreation.
In addition, three new lighted pickleball courts will be installed near the soccer complex building. These courts will be free to use and open to the public.
The walking trail around the complex pond will also be fully resurfaced to enhance safety and accessibility. “After 27 years, we are resurfacing the walking trail. It’s one of the major benefits of our complex for exercise and fishing accessibility.”, added Brian Moore, Director Martin Parks & Recreation.
