Union City, Tenn.–First graders at Union City Elementary School crowned their own Super Bowl champion long before the big game was played.

Stephanie Sisco’s class edged a group of students of Angie Conley to claim the title of ‘Sight Word Super Bowl Champions’ in a football-based theme competition held before last week’s Super Bowl.

The event not only celebrated football but reinforced reading, math, and teamwork skills that made the day a touchdown for both students and teachers.

Students participated in a variety of activity centers using the Super Bowl as a backdrop, encouraging creativity and teamwork in each process. They crafted their own Lombardi Trophies, decorated personalized football players, and participated in an interactive activity using math and critical thinking skills that tallied and graphed predictions of the Super Bowl winner.

Teachers and students dressed in their favorite team’s jerseys and cheerleading outfits, fostering a festive atmosphere throughout the halls of UCES.

In true football spirit, students wrote their own Super Bowl predictions, engaging in creative writing during the practice.

The highlight of the day was the Sight Word Super Bowl competition, with students practicing ‘tricky’ words they have learned so far this school year. Using a bracket system that pitted classes against each other, Mrs. Sisco’s class narrowly beat out Mrs. Conley’s class and was declared the inaugural Super Bowl winner.

The day concluded with special treats for all participants, resulting in big smiles and memories made in a day well spent.
