Always looking to the future, Union City Schools has approved its calendar for the 2025-26 school year.

The UC school board recently gave unanimous approval to the proposed calendar after getting the framework for the plan from Director of Schools Wes Kennedy.

“It’s a good calendar, and one that took into consideration some things that our teachers always want,” Kennedy told the board. “They don’t want to start school in July and like getting out (of school) before Memorial Day.

“We were able to take care of both of those wishes.”

The first day of classes for the 2025-26 school year is set for Aug. 11. Registration will take place four days earlier (Aug. 7) at the three UCSS campuses.

Teachers will be present for professional development for two days in July and will also put in two prep days in July. System-wide, Union City Schools faculty and staff will participate in three days of PD, Aug. 4-6, and another prep day on Aug. 8.

Students will receive 177 days of classroom instruction, broken down almost evenly (88-89) in two semesters. There will be three professional development days for teachers during the school year – Sept. 19, Jan. 5, and Mar. 13.

The calendar includes the traditional school breaks – Fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring – as well as observance of Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, and Good Friday.

Fall Break is scheduled for Oct. 8-10, Thanksgiving Break for Nov. 26-28, Christmas Break for Dec.  22-Jan. 4, and Spring Break for April 6-10.

Teachers will return from Christmas Break on Jan. 5 (2026) for a professional development day before students return to class the following day.

Graduation is set for May 16 for the Class of 2026.

“It’s a really good schedule, I believe,” Kennedy said. “It provides excellent educational opportunities for both our students and staff and allows our teachers to develop plans for their individual classrooms.

“I know everyone will enjoy our breaks, and they are well-timed in the grand scheme of things.”

More than five inclement weather days are subject to be made up at the end of the year.
