Paris, Tenn.–It’s a big deal for the Lakewood School art and ag students and Henry County Schools.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has partnered with art students at Lakewood School in Paris for the region’s inaugural ‘Paint the Plow’ event. The students designed and painted a TDOT snowplow using the slogan, “Stay Safe: Moo-ve Over”.

The snowplow has now been formally retired and will be in parades and community events, including the Christmas parade in downtown Paris. The 8th grade Art 1 students and ag students at the school have been working on the plow since mid-October and it was unveiled outside the school Thursday. Their teacher is Brandi Besand.

According to Ivy Belew, TDOT Regional Communications Specialist, the project includes one school from each of the four regions across Tennessee to encourage community engagement and raise awareness of TDOT’s commitment to keeping Tennessee roads safe during winter weather.

“Lakewood School students enthusiastically embraced the challenge, designing a plow blade that highlights the agriculture community, school spirit, and the importance of road safety. This project allowed students to combine creativity and community pride while contributing to an important safety message,” she said. “The painted snowplow will be featured at various community events and parades, serving as a traveling canvas for the students’ artwork. Once the winter season begins, it will be used in snow and ice removal, spreading both cheer and safety throughout the region.”

According to TDOT, drivers are reminded to use all motorist information tools wisely and Know Before You Go! by checking travel conditions before leaving for your destination. Drivers should never tweet, text, or talk on a cell phone while behind the wheel.

The Move Over Law was passed in 2006. The penalty for violating the law in Tennessee carries the possibility of up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of up to $500.
