Murray, Ky.–The driver was entrapped and six passengers needed help being removed from a vehicle which slammed into a tree head on in Calloway County.
Calloway County 911 Communications Center dispatched Fire & Rescue to the intersection of Highway 641 North & Flint Road for a single vehicle accident with injuries. Dispatch also advised that a 911 caller stated they could see multiple people inside the vehicle and that smoke was possibly coming from the wrecked vehicle.
Pumper 1 arrived on scene in less than 4 minutes to find that a car had exited the roadway & struck a tree head on causing the driver to become entrapped inside the vehicle. Dispatch was notified of the entrapment & an additional alarm was toned out for more manpower to assist.
Calloway County Sheriff’s Office & Murray-Calloway County EMS were also on scene helping remove the other six occupants of the vehicle while CCFR worked to remove the driver using hydraulic rescue tools, also known as the “jaws of life”. Medical personnel requested mutual aid from Marshall County EMS as well as requested two AirEvac helicopters to respond to transport patients for serious injuries.
Due to the weather conditions, only one helicopter was able to respond to the Murray-Calloway County Hospital where three of the seven patients were flown to other hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Thankfully, all patients are expected to make a full recovery from their injuries.
CCFR responded to the scene with 2 pumpers, 2 brush trucks, 3 support trucks and 1 command vehicle with 22 firefighters who were on scene for approximately an hour and a half. CCFR was assisted by Calloway County Sheriff’s Office, Murray-Calloway County EMS, Marshall County EMS, AirEvac 159 & Parker Ford Towing. A big thank you to all who showed up when the tones dropped from all the responding agencies. On a scene like this, it takes all hands on deck to take care of business while also providing care to the people we serve in our community.
