Union City, Tenn.–Union City Schools’ ‘No Excuses’ motto was on full display with the Golden Tornado marching band Saturday.
Despite missing six members from its lineup due to sickness, the Purple People responded with their best performance of the season – according to Director Jason Deem – bringing home third place overall among 23 bands in the Gibson County Marching Invitational.
“We overcame several obstacles and considerable adversity,” Deem insisted. “And I thought it was as well as we’ve performed so far.
“It truly was a great example of our ‘No Excuses’ motto, and our theme this year, which is ‘Rise Up’. Our students rose up and did a great job.”
In addition to its strong overall finish, UC also placed 2nd in Drum Major, 3rd in percussion, and 3rd in Guard.
The Marching Tornadoes swept the preliminary round in their classification, winning 1st place in Band, Percussion, Guard, and Drum Major.
Union City will compete in the Choctaw Classic at Dyer County High School at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday of this week, then close its competition season in the Division 2 State Championship in Smyrna on Nov. 2.
